The cloud has been called the new normal, even for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). But companies should still take the time to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option, weighing benefits as well as risks.

In a recent blog post, Arke Sitecore consultant Neil Killen explained the differences between Coveo cloud versus its on-premises solution.

Killen has been developing and designing technology solutions for more than 16 years and has a strong background in web application development.

Coveo for Sitecore

Coveo provides highly advanced search and relevance for personalized online experiences within Sitecore websites.

Out of the box, Coveo makes Sitecore websites more relevant to visitors through productized integration. It provides broad connectivity, an advanced Relevance Engine, and JavaScript Interface editor.

Last year Coveo released version 4 of its Coveo for Sitecore product. It enables users to host their Coveo for Sitecore index in the cloud as well as on-premises.

Coveo Cloud Advantages

Hosting your index in the cloud has some obvious benefits, Killen said.

The cloud version is easier to maintain than on-premises because mirrors and redundancy are handled by the cloud platform. There’s less infrastructure, so “you don’t need to procure additional servers for hosting your Coveo indexes across all your various environments,” he explained.

Developers can be up and running with an index in the cloud in 30 minutes or less. They also gain data resiliency and high availability because cloud architecture is distributed across multiple zones and geographic regions, he continued.

It also scales beautifully. “Built on dynamic processing power environments and thanks to its scalable architecture, Coveo Cloud is able to seamlessly scale computing systems to maintain optimal user experience,” Killen said.

Unique Cloud Features

Coveo cloud also offers some unique features, Killen said. Specifically:

  • Machine Learning Relevance Tuning — provides users with a more relevant search result set, based on previous users search interactions.
  • Machine Learning Query Suggestion — offers alternate searches based upon aggregated past behavior
  • Machine Learning Recommendations — suggests related content that reflects what other users making similar searches have also viewed.
